Sad French End for Groclin's Giant-Killers

Poland's only remaining team in European competition met a sorry end in Bordeaux on Wednesday night, carved up by the French league's ninth-placed side in a 4-1 UEFA Cup third round defeat. Groclin Grodzisk played excellently for the first 40 minutes, but couldn't finish any of a number of chances to take the lead and even up their 1-0 defeat against Bordeaux in the first leg in Poland. The tie was decided in the space of two minutes at the end of the first half, when Bordeaux grabbed two headed goals.
"It's not like we played that badly. We made some poor mistakes for the goals and that was enough," said the team's trainer Duszan Radolsky.
As in the first game in Grodzisk in western Poland (pop. 15,000), Bordeaux had a man sent off - this time in the 84th minute for a head but on Groclin's Tomasz Sikora.
The Poles grabbed their single consolation goal in stoppage time eight minutes later. The defeat ends Groclin's giant-killing exploits in the competition, after beating England's Manchester City and Germany's
Hertha Berlin in the first and second rounds. But fans may take heart from the team's up-tempo performance - just how to repair that leaky defence...
